INTEGRATED FARMING, CASH CROP CULTIVATION AND DOUBLE CROPPING TO BE TAKEN UP IN LARGE SCALE: Y. JOYKUMAR SINGH

IMPHAL, 30th May, 2017(DIPR):Deputy Chief Minister Shri Yumnam Joykumar Singh has said that integrated farming, cash crop cultivation and double cropping should be taken up in large scale to increase productivity in the State.

Speaking at the 23rd Regional Committee Zone III Meeting of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) at City Convention Centre in Imphal today, Deputy Chief Minister said, there have been a lot of problems in the farm sector in the State. He said, lack of proper irrigation system, storage capacity and technological knowhow are some of the major problems that hampered the overall productivity. Although the ideas of integrated farming and double cropping have been introduced, it has not been developed so far.

Shri Y. Joykumar Singh further said that despite confining only to rice cultivation,

people should also try to cultivate cash crops from time to time so that it can generate income considerably. He said, alternative farming methods like horticulture and floriculture should be introduced in full scale mostly in the hilly areas to minimize jhuming and terrace cultivation. He insisted to the researchers and scientists to dwell upon in integrated farming, cash crop cultivation and developing double cropping in the State.

Agriculture Minister Shri V. Hangkhanlian said, with the increasing population the area of cultivation also need to be extended in the State. He said, Rice Research Stations should develop High Yielding Varieties (HYV) suitable in high altitudes and also deep water paddy varieties for partially submerged areas in Ikop and Kharung Pat. He also said that altogether 9 KVK are fully functioning in the State and government is trying to increase it at least one each to all the districts.

Director General ICAR, Government of India, Dr.Trilochan Mohapatra also spoke in the inaugural session of the two days meeting. Researchers and Scientists from other North Eastern States also took part in the meeting. (DIPR)
