SHIRUI LILY FESTIVAL ENDS AMIDST POMP AND GAIETY

New State Tourism Festival will give a Boost to the Promotion of Tourism in the State – Governor

Imphal, May 20, 2017 (DIPR): Shirui Lily Festival, 2017, which kicked off from 16th of May, 2017 ended today at Tangkhul Nagalong Ground (TNL), Ukhrul, amidst pomp and gaiety.

In the closing ceremony, speaking as the Chief Guest of the function, Hon’ble Governor of Manipur, Dr. Najma Heptulla, complimented the State Government and others associated in organizing the festival for their endeavour to make the people aware of the environment, State’s rich bio-diversity as well as rich cultural heritage. The Governor also congratulated the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur for his initiative to organize the festival in State level successfully. She also expressed that the new State Tourism Festival will give a boost to the promotion of tourism in the State, leading to more footfalls of tourists with Shirui Lily and picturesque Ukhrul providing the added attractions. Stressing the need to protect the rare flower which blooms in late May to early June, She lauded the work of ICAR in protecting and promoting the flower from extinction which are facing tremendous threat because of the exploitation of their habitats. Ukhrul Headquarter is also facing serious threat to its water supply because of forest destruction in the Shirui range and so the task at hand is huge, she added.

Manipur has huge tourism potential and the festival will not only create awareness about the need for protection of environment but can also attract tourists which will not only improve the well being of the local population but also bring advanced knowledge and expertise to improve the environment, she added. Expressing her concern on the economic backwardness of the State, she said that tourism can be the key to economic development with better connectivity. She expressed her hope that peace prevails in the Hills and Valley Districts and the brotherly relations between the Hills and Valley people be restored forever through the festival. Cultural items were presented as part of the Closing Ceremony.

Hon’ble Speaker, Manipur Legislative Assembly, Shri Y. Khemchand, Hon’ble Ministers Shri L. Jayentakumar Singh (Health & FW/Law & LA/Art & Culture/CADA), Shri Letpao Haokip (IFCD/YAS) and Shri Th. Radheshyam (Edn./Labour & Employment) attended the closing ceremony as President and Guests of Honour respectively. (DIPR)
