Chief Minister’s letter to Union Home Minister appealing stringent action against culprits.

Dated 9th Feb. 2014

Dear Shri Sushilkumar Shindeji

The recent incidents of violence, sexual assault and molestation against the people of North East in Delhi are quite disturbing and highly condemnable. The people of whole region including Manipur are distressed over the death of Mr. Nido Tania from Arunachal as well as the incident of heckling of two Manipuri girls and rape of minor girl from Manipur on the night of 7th February, 2014.

In the last 10 years of UPA Government at Centre, there has been rapid development of North-Eastern region and consequently, there is a decline in insurgency within the region with improved law and order situation. There has been perceptible increase in mobility of people from this part of the country to other regions in search of education, business and work. On the other hand, people from other parts are also converging for business and tourism in NE India. However, these unfortunate incidents of violence and discrimination against people of NE region with other part of our country.

I appreciate the initiative taken by the Union Government to have a committee to look into the issues and suggest ways & means to contain these kinds of incidents in future. Every citizens of this country has a right to live with dignity anywhere in India. Any attempt to discriminate on the basis of culture or region etc should not only be discouraged but dealt with strongly in accordance with law.

I request you to direct the authorities concerned to take stringent action against the culprits in these incidents as per law of the land. It is also requested to put in place a framework for providing adequate protection to the students/people from NE region in other parts of the country, especially in metros like Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai.

With warm regards

Yours Sincerely

O.Ibobi Singh.
