Title: The Physics of Lunar Dust – How much do we know?
Speaker: Prof. Madhurjya P. Bora
Department of Physics, Gauhati University.
Abstract: Devoid of any atmosphere, the moon serves as natural laboratory for studying plasma-matter interaction due to the constant influx of solar wind. The lunar dust – an ubiquitous element to the near-surface lunar plasma, get blown off the lunar regolith due to the impact of high velocity solar wind particles, which then mix with the solar wind plasma resulting complex plasma phenomena. One other important factor is the high energy solar UV photons, which cause photoemission of electrons from the lunar surface. The interaction of photoelectrons with plasma electrons creates a unique environment for the lunar dust particles.
In this talk, we shall try to understand the intricacies involved in such environment and learn how important physical insights can be gained into the physics of such phenomena through numerical simulations.
