HealthCity, Langol, March 04, 2016: A 45 years old lady from Tarung, Imphal West, attended the Cardio-Thoracic & Vascular Surgery OPD on 22-02-16 with complaints of small swelling in the left upper chest wall for the past 3 years and occasional shortness of breath during sleep. The swelling measured about 6 X 6 cm. This lady had earlier visited different hospitals within the state and outside the state as well. Attempt was even made to remove the tumour but it was not successful. Finally she was assured that it is a common lipoma (popularly known as Ghee in Manipuri). It was quite evident from the previous MRI that the swelling was not just superficial but extended inside the chest as well. After consulting with Dr. Sidartha Lukram, MCh (CTVS), Super Specialist Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgeon, the patient was advised for CT scan. According to the CT scan, it was found to be a big tumour.

After proper evaluation the tumour was successfully removed on 26-02-16 by a team of doctors led by Dr. Sidartha Lukram through median sternotomy or by dissecting the long flat bone shaped like a necktie located in the center of the chest. During the course of the surgery the tumour was found to be attached to vital organs like heart, aorta or the largest blood vessel supplying oxygenated blood from the heart to every organ and thymus, an important organ that regulates the immune system.

The patient is now stable and recovering well. Any lump or swelling in the chest should not be neglected or taken lightly. Get yourself thoroughly checked by a specialist doctor as soon as you detect any abnormality in the chest according to a statement issued by Dr. Sidartha.
