September 2, 2013: The scribes in Manipur under the aegis of All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union (AMWJU) today take out a silent Protest rally against the threats and pressures served to media houses and newspaper hawkers by some UG organizations.
The threat served to the journalists came out of a disagreement between media houses and the UG organization concerned over publication of a news item.
The scribes’ protest rally started from Manipur Press Club at about 11 am and arrived at Chief Minister’s Bungalow. A team of journalists led by AMJWU’s president Wangkhemcha Shyamjai met Chief Minister Okram Ibobi and apprised him of the present problems faced by the journalists and appealed him to take up necessary action.
The journalists, after holding a talk with Manipur Chief Minister, discussed the present issue of UG threat served to the scribes minutely in a General body meeting held at Manipur press club premises.
On the other hand, since All Manipur Newspaper Sales’ and Distributors’ Association has stopped distributing newspapers to the general public for three days as a result of threats served to the hawkers and distributors by some UG groups, people in the state are deprived of the daily information facilities. Newspaper distribution is likely to stop until the present conflict is settled amicably.
