Abstract: An ambitious, but technically challenging goal in the molecular scale electronics is to realize three-terminal devices, where the current through a molecular architecture under biased condition can be modulated by a second gate field, analogous to the current in inorganic field-effect transistors (FETs). It is important to note that organic molecules, unlike inorganic solid state devices, offer an additional mechanism: molecular conformation-induced or simply “structural” gating, whereby the electron transport, and therefore the tunneling current can be controlled with changes in molecular conformation. In this talk, we present the results of our recent study based on density functional theory. The results of our studies and by others have provided an improved understanding of the underlying physics, helped identify the fundamental mechanisms and encouraged new experimental efforts toward realizing molecular-scale electronics and sensors.
