‘Shumang lila is our culture, nation’s integrity and medium of social change’
Imphal, July 20: The month long training on Shumang Lila Tradition and festival of Moirang Parva conducted by Manipur state Shumang Lila council and Theatre Mirror, Manipur concluded today at Iboyaima Shanglen.
With Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam as chief guest, the closing function was attended also attended by Dr. Kh. Ratankumar, Works Minister, P.Gunachandra, President, Manipur state Shumang Lila council.
The month long training program was participated by about 67 aspiring artiste. Apart from teaching the art form, dancing, singing and acting, the participants were also taught about the traditions, rituals, history, background related to Manipuri Shumang Leela by many experts of the state.
Minister Govinda Konthoujam gave away certificates to the Shumang Lila trainees during the function.
Renown Shumang Lila actor Sougrakpam Hemanta while giving his key note address, said that the month long Shumang lila training cum workshop is a research oriented one that aims to preserve and protect the aged old tradition of Shumang Leela from influence from other art forms of the world.
Shumang lila is our culture, nation’s integrity and medium of social change. However, this art form is facing the threat of languishing its unique status. With a view to safeguard the art form, The Manipur Shumang Leela Council, the apex body of Shumang Leela groups, in collaboration with Theatre Mirror, Manipur has undertaken the project. The training programme is part of an exercise to establish a Shumang lila academy in the state.
