Late Dr Atulchandra remembered on his birthday, a statue erected at Manipur University.

“ Because of his contribution towards library moment a Statue of Late Dr. Huirongbam Atulchandra is being erected inside the reading hall of Manipur University” says Prof. Nandakumar Sharma, Vice Chancellor Manipur University in a humble function at MU Library Hall.

Around, 1933 Dr. Atulchandra opened two public libraries in and around Canchipur with full of books. He was the first person in the area to have encouraged reading habit among students, adults, academicians’ etc. by making certain books available in his library and we need to remember his contribution continued the VC.

Family members of Late Dr Atulchandra have also donated areas of land, free of costs towards the University. The areas where the present Guests House is built are being donated by Atulchandra’s family.

An executive board including the dean, myself and other officials gave a go forward towards the installation of Statue inside the reading hall for generations to remember says the VC in an exclusive interview.

Laishram Birendrakumar Singh eminent musicologists, H Romani – Social Activist, Prof. Elangbam Dinamani – President Manipur Sahitya Parishad spoke on the good Samaritan work Atulchandra had done for the society including opening up of a school in Canchipur.

Today’s function was jointly organized by Manipur University and family members of Late. Dr Atulchandra.

Dr Th Khomdon Singh Librarian Manipur University mentions that the present Vice Chancellor has done a tremendous work in uplifting the library. In expanding and installing certain hall for meeting at the top floor. The computer room up gradation at the top floor and other works are also done during his tenure.

 

The Vice Chancellor spoke that the library is one of the best in North East. The infrastructure is up to the mark and we are not behind other libraries in different universities. Through internet we can access up to 8600 journals and information technology is helping in this area.
