IMPHAL, 05 August 2017 (DIPR): Education, Labour & Employment Minister Shri Th. Radheshyam said that mother’s first milk for every newborn child is the key for strong development of baby’s immune system. He was speaking at the World Breastfeeding Week 2017 being observed at the G. P. Women’s College, Imphal, under the theme “Sustaining Breastfeeding Together”.

Health and mentality of the human depends on what one consumes. If one consumes good thing then it makes both the health and mind strong otherwise, vice-versa. Everyone choose good things over bad things. Today’s observation is a moment that would strengthen the future mother, not only of the state but for the country too, in terms of their duty, when these girls become a mother. Knowledge not only spreads in the formal education but also spreads faster through informal discussion of how and in what ways such exercises of breastfeeding a newborn can benefit both the child and mother, he added.

He said that every celebration should be observed to benefit the society as a whole. The observation of the World Breast Feeding Week, 2017 in the state should be to make one and all know the importance of breastfeeding instead of confining it in the walls of academic field. The ability to provide solution to enrich the human values, by lessening the prevailing problems is the ones who become the true mentors and facilitators of the society, he added.

Today’s World Breastfeeding Week 2017 was organised by Breastfeeding Promotion Alliance of Manipur (BPAM). The advisor of BPAM Dr. Ksh. Chourajit Singh, said that mother’s milk is a very special gift of God that today’s highly advance science haven’t been able to create a milk that has exactly the same quality of mother’s milk. He said that one main reason for the decline in breastfeeding is due to the failure to realise the importance of breastfeeding by mothers and confining to outdated traditional ideas of not breastfeeding to a newborn child.

Breastfeeding the child not only benefits the child’s health but also creates a bond between the mother and the child, he added. For the mother to develop the capability to breastfeed her newborn, the mother must have a strong determination and love to breastfeed the baby for it is an act of emotion rather than physical ability, he explained.

Principal and teachers of G. P. Women’s College were also present shedding light on the importance of breastfeeding. The ongoing weeklong observation is being organised from 1st August to 7th August 2017, where the experts and resource persons do lectures and presentation. (DIPR)
