Imphal, April 25, 2017 (DIPR): Efforts are on to complete the ongoing restoration work of Imphal-Jiribam Highway at the earliest, said State Public Works Minister Shri Thongam Biswajit Singh, today, during an inspection visit along National Highway 37. Restoration work of the highway is taken up by the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL).
While inspecting the Makru Bridge site this morning, the Minister said there is apprehension that there may be some delay in completion of the road restoration work considering the present weather condition. Elaborating further, he said the present government had assured to the public that restoration work of the Imphal-Jiribam highway will be completed by April-end. However, he said, all efforts will be put in to complete the work by the stipulated deadline of April-end. Due to heavy rainfall witnessed in recent time, work has not been progressive, but if the weather allows proper work by May, it will be completed at the earliest.
The Minister continued that the span of the Barak Bridge which will be constructed along the highway will be 154 meters, while that of Makru Bridge will be 122 meters. On the stipulated deadline for competition of the two bridges, Minister Biswajit said although the time for completion of the bridges was three years, the Union Minister of State Road transport had, during a visit, informed that three years is a long time and that construction should be completed within one and a half year.
The Minister further observed that there are also plans to create road diversion at the construction sites so that there is not much disturbances on traffic movement during construction of the bridges.
He said after completion of the restoration work, there is another project for pavement of the two-lanes. There are also plans to take up four laning of the important roadways in the State including the Imphal-Jiribam, Imphal-Mao-Maram and Imphal-Moreh highways, he said.
Minister Biswajit also said that Central leaders have shown much interest in the developmental works in the State.
The Minister, accompanied by the concerned engineers of the State Works department including the Chief Engineer, had left for Jiribam yesterday afternoon along the highway and after a night’s stay at Jiribam, returned to Imphal this afternoon.
It may be mentioned that work on the dilapidated portions of the highway, considered the second lifeline of the State, has been put on a war footing, ever since the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited took over the restoration work of the highway from the Border Road Organisation. Restoration work on the 223 km long Imphal-Jiribam highway began on March 27.
