Imphal, 17th May 2017 (DIPR): Family acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people is necessary to protect the young LGBTI from the alarming situation including harassment and discrimination they face from those who misunderstand them, said Education Minister Shri Th. Radheshyam. He was speaking as the Chief Guest of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia And Biphobia (IDAHOT), 2017 observation today.
He said everyone living in the society has equal rights irrespective of birth, religion and gender, thus no one has the right to discriminate or defy anyone from their right to live freely, independently and enjoy the best of facility available for everyone on ground of gender biasness.
Family, he added, should act as shield to defend the LGBTQI members of one’s family who had been created by god’s grace as a nature’s gift. He said they should not be treated as embarrassment but rather as a member who need the utmost love and care like any other member.
Such programme as today’s, he added, need to be organised in public places targeting schools and colleges, and public in order to make the general people aware of the LGBTQI as gift by nature rather than a sickness or psychological problem which was once regarded so.
One of the resource person pointed out that there is a need to put more effort to bring out the hidden communities and fight away their self stigma to bring the best change in them and for society as well.
The function was also attended IGNTU, Regional Campus Manipur director (i/c) Dr Ng Ngalengnam as president and Advisor to Chief Minister P Saratchandra Singh as guest of honour. The observation was organised by the The Humsafar Trust, Mumbai in collaboration with Department Of Social Work, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University Regional Campus, Manipur at the Auditorium, Tribal Research institute, Imphal.
