PRADHAN MANTRI UJJWALA YOJANA TO BE INTRODUCED IN THE STATE

IMPHAL, MAY 5, 2017(DIPR): The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana which provides LPG connection to poor households will be introduced soon in the state. This was stated by Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution Minister Shri Karam Shyam during a press meet today at his residence at Lilong Chajing Mairenkhong, Imphal West.
Minister Karam Shyam said he met the Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gases, Dharmendra Pradhan in New Delhi on May 3, 2017. Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is likely to inaugurate the gas bottling plant at Malom on May 14, 2017. Minister Karam Shyam said 3.5 lakhs active consumers and 2.62 lakhs BPL consumers are being covered by distributers in 80 locations. Till now 4,552 consumers have been covered under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. More than 1.5 lakhs consumers can avail benefits under the scheme which provides free LPG connections to women belonging to BPL (below-poverty-line) households he added.

Minister Karam Shyam also met Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Shri Ram Vilas Paswan in New Delhi on April 27, 2017 and urged the Minister not to cut subsidy on sugar. The central government had discontinued sugar subsidy from March 1, 2017, however PDS sugar subsidy for AAY (Antyodaya Anna Yojana) families was restored on May 3, 2017.

Minister Karam Shyam also handed over a letter written by Chief Minister Shri N Biren Singh highlighting the serious effect to the state government and to the common man with regard to cut in subsidy on sugar. Minister Karam Shyam requested for regular and uninterrupted provision of subsidy on sugar. During the meet, Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan gave assurance that he will put up the grievances to the Union Cabinet and advised that the Chief Minister should also put up the grievances with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

In view of the commitment given by the government to provide adequate food grains to the people, Minister Shri Karam Shyam said that, the Centre has approved construction of wheat Silo (storage) with a capacity of 50,000 MT (Metric tonnes) to be built on 11 acres of land and rice Silo with storage capacity of 5,000 MT in 7 acres of land. He said the government will soon decide on the locations where the Silos will be set up.

Minister Shri Karam Shyam also said rice Silos with a capacity of 2,000 MT will be set up in seven (7) districts. The Minister said that he will soon visit Chandel district and Tamenglong district, where the Silo construction has been delayed due to land settlement and other issues. Minister Shri Karam Shyam also appealed to the elected members to work for the welfare of the people and said he will consult with elected members so that maximum benefits reach the poor and needy people of the state.
