Abstract: The Nobel Prize in Physics, 2016 was awarded to Thouless, Haldane and Kosterlitz for their theoretical discoveries of Topological phases of matter and their phase transitions. These topological phases are new kinds of quantum matter that goes beyond the paradigm of Landau symmetry breaking theory. In this talk, the speaker will explain what topological phases of matter are, their properties, how to describe them and their possible applications. He will also introduce a new numerical technique known as Tensor Network algorithms which have proven to be very useful to study topological phases and other interesting quantum many-body systems, and also present some of the work that he has been doing with his collaborators in this direction.
