INVITATION FOR RIST POPULAR TALK

You are cordially invited to attend the monthly popular talk series organized by the RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (RIST), IMPHAL

Topic: Fluids with random interactions: Pair-interaction ordering and particle dynamics
Speaker: Dr. Lenin S. Shagolsem, Department of Basic Sciences and Humanities (Physics), National Institute of Technology Manipur, Langol, Imphal

Abstract: Inspired by biological systems in which thousands of different types of proteins interact within a cell, we use molecular dynamics simulations to study multi-component systems in the large number of species limit. The static and dynamical properties of the multi-component fluid in the limiting case where all the particles are different (APD) are discussed. The particles are of identical size, but their pair interaction parameters are generated at random from a uniform (U) or from a peaked (GM) distribution. We study both global and the local properties of these systems at temperatures above the freezing transition and find that APD fluids relax into a non-random state characterized by clustering of particles according to the values of their pair interaction parameters. We further analyze the single particle trajectories with focus on GM system. As temperature is lowered, the dynamics of the GM system becomes increasingly complex, as the intrinsic difference between the particles is amplified by neighbourhood identity ordering and by the heterogeneous structure at lower temperatures. The ramifications of our results for the analysis of protein tracking experiments in living cells are also discussed.
