DEVOTION BECOMES A WAYS OF LIFE – K. RADHAKUMAR

Imphal, May 30, 2017 (DIPR) : The 9th Death anniversary function of R.K. Shitaljit Singh was held at Rupmahal Theatre, Imphal today. The function was graced by Commissioner, IPR Shri Kangjam Radhakumar Singh, IAS and Registrar, Manipur University of Culture Shri Longjam Joychandra Singh as Chief guest and President respectively.

Speaking on the occassion, K. Radhakumar said that on this day, we should remember him as a teacher, a pioneer of Manipuri short strories writer and as a novelist. We could acknowledge ‘devotion becomes a ways of life’ from his great contribution during his life. The words used by him are very familiar to our daily used phrases. A national awardee and noted writer like Shitaljit’s simplicity as a style which make peoples’ understand by his writings.

Some of the awards received by Shitaljit are like, Fellow of the State Kala Academy, national Teacher’s Award from the President of India (1967), Doctorate (Honours course) from the Manipur University, Jogendrananda Giri Award of the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Thoibi Award, Scroll of Honour awarded by the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad, Award by the Manipuri Sahitya Parishad’s Diamond Jubilee.

Longjam Joychandra in his presidential speech recalled the important roles played by Shitaljit while he was a teacher and urged we should not forget the legacy of the writer, he added. As part of the function, Khwairakpam Bishwamitra read out two short poems while Loitongbam Doren also read out short strory written by Shitaljit.

Shitaljit could get a chance of teaching at Bengali High School for three months. Then he work for another one month at Tamphasana Girls’ High School. Later, he became the Assistant Head Master at Ram Lal Paul High School. He wrote more than 13 school text books in English and Manipuri. He also compiled two types of Anglo-Manipuri Dictionary.

The anniversary observation was jointly organised by Sahitya Thoupanglup and Shitaljit Ningsing Seba Samiti. Floral tribute was also paid to the photo of Shitaljit.

Later, a film title ‘Khujinda Yotpi’ directed by Bishwamitra was also screened to the gathering. (DIPR)
