5th GENERAL PANCHAYAT ELECTION 2017 WILL BE HELD ON 7TH OCTOBER

Imphal, August 17, 2017 (DIPR): The 5th General Panchayat Election will be held on October 7, 2017. The announcement was made today during a press conference held at Imphal West DC Complex, Lamphelpat, by Shri Th. Kaminikumar Singh, State Election Commissioner, Manipur. He said that, the Election Code of Conduct in the territorial area of the Panchayats will be enforce from the day of public notification i.e., from August 18, 2017. He also said that, to maintain the mandate of the Constitution, the 5th Panchayat Election is being announced as the current 4th General Panchayat will expire on October 23, 2017.

The election for 60(sixty) Zilla Parishad, 161 (one hundred and sixty one) Pradhan and 1,513 (one thousand five hundred and thirteen) Ward Members will be held in the 6 (six) Revenue Districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Kakching and Jiribam. A total number of 7,16,830 electors will exercise their franchise, out of which the female voters (3,68,691) have outnumbered the male electors (3,48,139).

Th. Kaminikumar Singh said that, the last date of filing nomination by the candidates will be on August 25, 2017 and the scrutiny of the nomination papers is scheduled on the next day i.e., August 26, 2017. Candidates can withdraw their nominations by August 29, 2017. Polling will begin from 8 am and end at 4 pm and in case of any election misconduct, re-polling will be held on October 9, 2017. The counting will begin on October 11, 2017 and the entire process of election will be completed by October 16, 2017. Altogether, there will be 1,521 polling stations and 9,126 polling personals will be engaged, out of which 10% will be reserved as stand by.

The 6 (six) Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of the respective districts will be the District Election Officers, 14(Fourteen) Returning Officers (ROs) and General Observers will look into the smooth functioning of the election process. For free and fair conduct of the election, the Commission have ask the concerned DC to appoint a Nodal Officer from the Police Department and for this a joint meeting of the DCs, SPs and the State Election Commission officials will be arrange shortly, he added. Ballot papers will be use for the election as per the regulation of the Election Commission as the Commission was unable to arrange Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) due to shortage of time. (DIPR)
