Imphal, June 6, 2017 (DIPR): Forests and Environment Minister, Shri Thounaojam Shyamkumar today said that, people of Thanga Assembly Constituency have a major role in helping the Government to protect the brow-antlered deer or the dancing deer – Sangai, which is only found in Manipur. Th. Shyamkumar was optimistic that, the target can be achieved when there is a joint effort between the Government and the local residents.
He was speaking as the Chief Guest of the function at a tree plantation cum awareness programme on Conserve Environment and Save Sangai – “The Pride of Manipur” organised by the Forest Department in connection with the World Environment Day – 2017 observed yesterday (June 5, 2017). The function was held at Phouoibee Lairembi Community Hall, ICCL Ground, Keibul Lamjao, Bishnupur district.
Th. Shyamkumar further said that, the BJP-led Government in the State has already started discussion on the welfare programmes for the people of the Thanga A/C. He assured that he will report to the Chief Minister Shri N. Biren Singh over the issues faced by the people, including immediate remedy to solve the issue of drinking water shortage and steps to increase population of Sangai. Calling upon the citizens to plant more trees, Th. Shyamkumar, appealed for more collective effort to save the environment for the future generation. He further said that, monetary help will be given for the maintenance of the trees as an initiative to conserve the environment.
Shri T. Robindro Singh, Planning and Development Authority (PDA) Chairman and Thanga A/C MLA spoke in length on importance of maintaining ecology. Expressing concern over the rapid rise in the temperature across the globe, Robindro Singh narrated his personnel experience, stating the temperature has shot up in New Delhi since 1981, when he was studying in the capital city of India. He further said that, if we do not maintain the ecology than there is serious threat of possible human extinction.
Shri M. Asnikumar, Vice Chairman Manipur Infrastructure Development Agency (MIDA) Manipur, said that, it is unfortunate that the Ethai barrage of the Loktak Hydro Project has a negative impact on the eco-system of the Keibul Lamjao National Park, which is the natural habitat of the brow-antlered deer or the dancing deer – Sangai. He further said that, the socio-economy of the people living near the Keibul Lamjao National Park has been adversely affected due to the prohibitory measures. He expressed hope that younger generation will take initiative along with the State Government to safe the Sangai deer.
As part of the function, Keibul Lamjao National Park view point building was inaugurated by Minister Th. Shyamkumar. Ahead of the function, dignitaries also planted saplings. The function was also attended by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & HoFF, K. Angami, Forest Department officials among others. (DIPR)
